Stable Close Equine Practice is a dedicated, 100% equine veterinary practice led by senior vets Alex Sergeant and Malcolm Morley. They are supported by a skilled team of vets: Rebecca Fellows, Vicky Jux, Bridey Shawyer, and Archie Moffat. Kirsty Barnard, an experienced clinician, also plays a key role in handling out-of-hours emergencies and some routine performance work.
Our skilled office team, managed by Jayne Bonner, includes Sue Grace, Tanya Lane, Jo Hopwood, and Izzy Parker. Together, they bring a wealth of experience to ensure the smooth running of the practice and are an integral part of our team.
Originally part of Stable Close Veterinary Clinic in Winchester, Stable Close Equine Practice became an independent equine-only practice in November 2003. We are now based at Bridgets Farm in Martyr Worthy, where we continue to provide exceptional care to our equine clients.
Alex qualified from the University of Bristol in 1996. Her first job was at Stable Close Veterinary Clinic and, following a period working at an equine hospital in Berkshire, she returned to Winchester in 2003 to found Stable Close Equine Practice. Her main interest is in sports medicine and poor performance. She is also a qualified BHS assistant instructor and has competed at British Eventing one-day and three-day events up to intermediate level. Alex is married to Rob and they have three children.
Malcolm graduated from the University of Bristol in 1993. He began his veterinary career at Liphook Equine Hospital, followed by positions in Lambourn and Australia. In 2003, Malcolm co-founded Stable Close Equine Practice, and his main professional interest is pre-purchase examinations. A past-president of the British Veterinary Association, he has also served as a council member of the British Equine Veterinary Association, where he chaired the Pre-Purchase Examination Committee
Vicky graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2013. After completing an internship in the Equine Hospital at The Royal Veterinary College, Vicky has spent the last 10 years working in solely equine practice in Hampshire. She enjoys all aspects of equine veterinary care, with a particular passion for diagnostic imaging. Vicky has recently completed her RCVS certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice and is currently studying towards her RCVS certificate in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. Outside of work, Vicky loves hacking her Irish Draught horse, Ember across the Hampshire countryside, usually accompanied by her Korthals Griffon dog, Louis.
Bridey joined Stable Close in 2024 after gaining valuable experience in equine practices across Southern England. She has a passion for all aspects of equine veterinary care, with a particular interest in dentistry and reproduction. Outside of work, Bridey enjoys riding and helps her mum with the breeding and showing of American Miniature Horses. She is often accompanied on her calls by her loyal Dachshund, Nula.
Archie is a familiar face in the Hampshire equestrian community, having grown up locally and competed in endurance riding with his Arab. He began his career with a six-month internship at an equine hospital in Devon, followed by a mixed clinical and teaching role at Charles Sturt University in Australia. Archie has a broad interest in all aspects of equine veterinary care and is committed to providing thorough, knowledgeable care to horses and their owners. Outside of work, he enjoys running and playing cricket and hockey for local sports teams.
After graduating from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2010 Kirsty completed her internship at Onderstepoort Equine Hospital. She then spent four years in equine practice in Johannesburg before moving to the UK in 2015. She has worked in equine ambulatory and hospital based practice in Surrey and West Sussex and is also an experienced racecourse vet. Kirsty enjoys being outdoors, she loves walking her dog and trail running.
Jayne Bonner leads the office team as our Office Manager. She has experience in financial administration, medical insurance and has a special interest in equine facilitated interaction and cognitative therapy. She lives locally with her family alongside which she has 2 horses: Dinky a mini shetland whom she drives and a homebred Caspian foal. Jayne also has one rescue dog called Lola.
Sue has been with Stable Close Equine since 2008 and is responsible for drug ordering. She has worked with horses and ponies for many years as well as in a local doctors' surgery. Sue has a small flock of Jacob ewes and is often in the office with Ruby, her labrador x spaniel.
Tanya joined Stable Close Equine in April 2018 and has taken over the main responsibilty of insurance claims. Tanya owns one horse, Cruz who she regularly takes out to competitions and fun rides. She also owns a German Shepherd, Nico.
Izzy is an experienced medical receptionist and has decided to combine her experience in this field with her love for horses to work in our equine office. Izzy owns her own horse and works part time at the Candover Stud handling their broodmares and foals.
Jo has a diploma in horse management and has trained in equine and business studies as well as attaining her BHS stage I and II levels. Jo was a long standing client of the practice for many years before sadly losing her retired pony William.
